“Ecotones”

A term referencing the transitional region shared by different ecosystems. An example being a tidal zone which is shared by competing terrestrial and aquatic life forms depending on whether the tide is in or out. Here I’m referencing mans struggle to impose organization on his world juxtaposed with the raw disorganization inherent in the world of nature. two competing schools of endeavor.

“Ecotone 1” is a photograph taken in Providence RI. of a construction project in which the city renovated the downtown area, cleaning up and relocating the Providence River course.

Here is the foreground raw naked rock juxtaposed against the tall modern skyscraper in the background with a transition through intervening architecture.

“Ecotone 2” is another in the series of photographs taken in Providence RI. This one shows the demolition phase of the city renovation project.

I especially like the tree struggling to assert itself at the apex of the partially demolished bridge. Nature conducting a reclamation project of its’ own.

“Ecotone 3” is the image of a crumbling stone bridge which used to span the Hudson River in Glens Falls New York.

Once again Nature is reclaiming what man has abandoned.

In “Ecotone 4 we get a glimpse of the newer replacement bridge soldiering alongside its’ decaying predecessor.
