Gallery of Ecotones

“Ecotone” is a term referring to the transitional region shared by two diverse habitats or ecosystems. An example being a tidal zone which is an ecotone shared by competing aquatic and terrestrial life forms depending on whether the tide is in or out. At high tide the habitat is dominated by aquatic life. At low tide the habitat is controled by terrestrial life . In these images I’m depicting mans struggle to impose his organization on the world juxtaposed with the raw disorganization implied by nature.

Abandoned stone bridge

“Ecotone 1” is a photograph taken in Providence RI. of a construction project in which the city renovated the downtown area, cleaning up and relocating the Providence River course.

Here the foreground is raw naked stone juxtaposed with the tall modern skyscraper in the background and with a transition through intervening levels of modernization in architecture.

“Ecotone 2” is another in the series of photographs taken in Providence RI. This one shows the demolition phase of the city renovation project.

I especially like the tree struggling to assert itself at the apex of the partially demolished bridge. Nature conducting a reclamation project of its’ own.

“Ecotone 3” is the image of a crumbling stone bridge which used to span the Hudson River in Glens Falls New York.

Once again Nature is reclaiming what man has abandoned.

In “Ecotone 4 we get a glimpse of the newer replacement bridge soldiering alongside its’ decaying predecessor.
